Electrochemical Energy Storage

Electrode materials and device architectures for supercapacitors, lithium ion capacitors and metal sulfur batteries.

Researchers in the group design electrochemically active electrode materials for faradaic supercapacitors, including metal oxides, metal phosphides and metal sulfides with tailored nanostructures. These materials deliver higher specific capacitance and higher energy density than carbon based double layer electrodes.

The group also works on lithium ion capacitors, a hybrid device that combines a battery type anode, a capacitor type cathode and a lithium ion electrolyte to reach high energy density and high power density in one cell. Related work covers lithium sulfur and sodium sulfur chemistries, where the group studies polysulfide conversion catalysts and host structures that keep the sulfur redox reaction fast and reversible.
